UNICAL Probes Extortion Allegations in NYSC Mobilization Process

By Benjamin GBOR

The University of Calabar has launched an investigation into mounting allegations of extortion and “obtaining-by-tricks” reportedly targeted at prospective corps members during the NYSC mobilization process.

In an internal memo dated May 27, 2025, and signed by the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Egaga Patrick Ikani, the university’s Students Affairs Division expressed deep concern over what it described as “unethical, embarrassing and unacceptable” practices carried out by some Corps Mobilization Officers (CMOs).

According to the memo, these officers—allegedly in collaboration with certain department heads, have been demanding unauthorized fees from students as part of their mobilization for national service.

“For the avoidance of doubt, NYSC mobilization is free and devoid of any form of charges,” the memo stated firmly.

To address the situation, the university has constituted a Secret Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with looking into the allegations retrospectively, with the aim of enforcing appropriate refunds and holding culpable individuals accountable.

The memo warns that any Corps Mobilization Officer or Head of Department found guilty will have their names forwarded to management alongside unfavorable reports for further disciplinary action.

Students and members of the university community are encouraged to report any breach of this directive directly to the Dean of Students, with assurances of strict confidentiality.
